In the News
Each year a dedicated group of volunteers work to make the wishes of children with a life-threatening medical condition in Tioga County. come true. Tioga County Friends of Hospice helps Make-A-Wish Central New York identify and grant wishes to children under the age of 18 which enrich their lives with hope, strength and joy.
"In an effort to help members of the community remember loved ones during the holiday season, the Friends of Hospice, in support of Hospice West at Lourdes, is once again inviting the community to light the Memorial Tree of Lights. This annual tradition is a project that has been in existence in the community for over 15 years, with memorial trees located in Apalachin, Barton, Berkshire, Candor, Campville, Newark Valley, Nichols, Owego, Richford, Spencer, Tioga Center, Waverly, Lockwood and Willseyville that will be lighted.
The program initially began with the planting of a tree in each town square located throughout Tioga county; the same trees that have been lighted year after year. For a $5 donation, a light can be purchased in honor of a loved one who has passed. Approximately 1,500 names are memorialized through the Tree of Lights each year. In addition to each white light memorializing the deceased loved one, the name of the loved one is also printed in the Owego Pennysaver for each donation through Christmas.
To participate in lighting your community’s Memorial Tree of Lights in memory of loved one(s), mail it to Memorial Tree of Lights, c/o Friends of Hospice, P.O. Box 638, Owego, NY 13827. Checks should be made out to “Memorial Tree of Lights.”
Within each Community, a sign located by the tree denotes it as the Memorial Tree of Lights. Friends of Hospice of Tioga County was formed as a non-profit organization in 1993. The board promotes hospice services provided by Lourdes Hospice West, the recruitment of Hospice volunteers, and provides financial assistance to families in need who are in the Hospice program. The by-laws of the Friends of Hospice allows them to contribute to similar organizations who are involved in fighting terminal illness such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and locally to Traci’s Hope. Volunteers are always needed. You can learn more by contacting Lourdes Hospice at 607-772-1598"
